When I first received my acceptance to study abroad in Iceland, the first thing that came to mind was all the sights I would see and gain throughout this trip. I’m a sucker for a good sky pic or anything that makes the “perfect photo dump” for my social media feed. Although it sounds cliché, I would LOVE to see the northern lights. This is an experience I would never be able to witness anywhere else, especially not with the muggy skies we often have with the overcast in Pittsburgh. As much as I love a good sunset illuminating the cathedral, no sunrise or set here could top the northern lights that paint the sky in Iceland.
But beyond that, I’m most excited to experience Icelandic culture through its food! As a huge foodie, I truly believe that the key to connecting with others is through a good meal. I think a traditional meal or even just a simple dish that encapsulates nostalgia helps us see into someone else’s shoes, providing a deeper sense of understanding between different cultures. Food is more than just a quick bite to eat, there is a strong social aspect that allows us to share stories, bond with strangers, and embrace new perspectives.
I recognize that this trip is so much more than just experiencing Iceland’s views and good eats, but also about how it ties into my education at the University of Pittsburgh. The University of Pittsburgh is known for its diverse and inclusive community; this diversity has only increased my curiosity and passion for learning about the world beyond the burgh. Studying abroad in Iceland will allow me to expand on my interests in other’s cultures, bring my experiences & education from Pitt, and gain new perspectives from an international setting.
I’m beyond excited to educate myself on Icelandic culture, especially through my taste buds, but I also hope to come back home with a stronger understanding of diversity and inclusion of other cultures/communities. Further, I am so excited to be able to engage in the Icelandic community with my fellow students and staff. This trip will not only broaden the scope of my education, but also reinforce the values of connections and the overall importance of embracing others in every aspect of life, not just within your typical class course.
