We spent the day today learning more about Czech history, engineering and exploring the Waterworks. Our history and engineering lectures took place at the historic Charles University in the city. This is the largest university in the Czech Republic and one of the oldest in the world. At the university we learned about the history of the Czech republic and how the country came to be. At the University we also learned more about some of the engineering industries in the Country. We learned about the silver mines and how those kicked off the future of engineering in the country.
My favorite part of the day though, was when we visited the Podoli Waterworks. At this impressive facility we had the chance to tour the museum they had and learn about some of the water supply in the country. We learned more about how they clean the water and how they transport the water through the country. It was really interesting to learn that in the beginning, when the country started supplying water, they used hollowed out wooden logs as pipes throughout the city. Surprisingly they were pretty efficient for the time and were able to transport the water without much leakage. As time went on they upgraded to a mostly cast iron piping system throughout the city.
