Day 3 in Prague has been amazing! Our Czech cooking class this morning was definitely the highlight of my trip so far! It was fun, educational, and most importantly delicious!
The structure of the cooking class was set up where we worked alongside professional chefs who demonstrated every step and then we were able to make the dishes on our own at the same time. They helped us with every step so we were able to learn a ton about Czech culinary styles and traditions. Traditional Czech food is quite different from the US. Many of the traditional dishes require a lot of time and preparation so it was realy cool how we were able to make 3 courses. Even though Americans eat large portions of pretty unhealthy food, I noticed how filling the foods are in Prague. Everything is made with potato, flour, meat, and other heavy foods. For example, our first course that we cooked was Kulajda, which is a thick soup made with mushrooms, potatoes, and other herbs and seasonings. Even though it was just a small bowl of soup I was already full after course 1! We then made traditional bread roll dumplings and beef and a delicious cream sauce. One thing that is interesting is that I never would have called the cooked lump of bread that we made a dumpling, but I’m not going to question it since it was really tasty. We then finished with homemade potato pancakes filled with plum jam. Overall, this was an incredible experience that I will never forget. Maybe I will try to recreate this in Pittsburgh next semester!
