Walking into the Terezin today I could not help but think about how we were seeing exactly what the Jewish prisoners saw years ago when they were brought to the concentration camp. It made picturing the horrors and torture they went through much more real, which was a truly somber moment. I am very thankful for the tour guide that brought us around the concentration camp. She did an incredible job telling their story. Seeing the rooms that they slept in and hearing that hundreds of people were placed in those rooms was devastating. Each room that we walked in to I took a moment to look at the doors and walls, thinking about being locked in those rooms, no light, no space. To think of the amount of effort that was put in to pretend nothing was happening in these concentration camps is heartbreaking. I felt so much anger hearing about how they were able to successfully put on a show for the Red Cross. I can’t imagine the pain the prisoners must have felt having to act happy. I am very glad that we took this trip as it has opened my eyes to the realities of the Holocaust.
