Had such an interesting day experiencing Kutna Hora! The architectural wonders of the Sedlec Ossuary and St. Barbara’s Cathedral are huge engineering feats that are inspiring to witness.
The Sedlec Ossuary construction and design especially was extremely moving. The fact that each individual bone is cataloged, mapped, and placed carefully in its designated position is extremely impressive. The bone church’s designed being modeled after its original layout means workers must be extremely thoughtful and particular. While the bone church could be considered morbid or disrespectful it proves how important ethics is in the field of engineering. The bones are bleached before being carefully placed in their designated spot in the church’s design. Furthermore, in the church no photos are allowed giving respect to the deceased and their families. Ethics is always a very important consideration in engineering whether it be something like the respectful preservation and presentation of the remains at the Sedlec Ossuary or ensuring work is truthful and completed in an honest manner.
