This week we were able to try a technique that was used throughout the renaissance to make paintings on wood panels using natural paints. The paints used where in those times made out of eggs, plants, bugs, and other natural things. Not only were the things used to make the paints natural but the wood itself was also a renewable resource that sequesters carbon as it grows. These things make this process very favorable for sustainable art and living practices. Tring out this technique showed how hard this process is as while you are painting this is done my making many little strokes of the fast-drying pigments. By the end of working on the iris painted there were roughly 4-5 layers of color put down and blended.
