Before coming to Germany, I expected Munich to be historic and beautiful, of course, but I did not realize how much personality the city would have or how comfortable it would feel to live here. Since arriving in Munich, the thing that has stood out to me the most is how much pride people have in their city and culture.

One of the first things I noticed about Munich is how quiet and clean it is. Even in busy areas, the city feels calm and organized. This is much different compared to the loud Pittsburgh atmosphere I am used to. Public spaces are well maintained, people are respectful of shared spaces, and there is an understanding that everyone takes care of the city together. This quietness made it super easy for me to settle in and enjoy everyday life here.

Another thing that stands out to me is the architecture and overall aesthetic of the city. We went on a walking tour through what is known as the Old Town, which exposed us to areas that we may have not found on our own. The churches are out of this world. The details in the paintings, the stained glass, and the stories behind some of them is incredible. The architect of the famous Cathedral is said to have made a deal with the devil where he was able to outsmart the devil. In a rage, the devil stomped his foot into the ground, leaving a footprint that is still visible today. He also cursed the area around the Cathedral making it windy all the time which is in fact true.

Everywhere you look there is history and care built into the architecture, showing the sides of war and Germany’s previous royalty. Walking through the old town feels very different from walking through any modern cities because there is such a strong connection to the past.

One cultural aspect I have really enjoyed is seeing traditional Bavarian clothing worn in everyday life. I grew up doing European folk dancing, so I wore clothing similar to dirndls and lederhosen during performances. I have traditional clothing from my ancestors, however, it is not worn outside just for a picture. It has been really cool to see people here wearing this traditional clothing naturally and proudly, not just as costumes or for tourists. It makes the culture feel alive rather than something of the past. You can tell that many people in Munich genuinely love their traditions and their culture.

Although I have only just gotten here, Munich already feels so welcoming to me. The combination of the city’s beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and strong cultural identity has already made a lasting impression. What stands out most is not just the history of the city, but how connected people still are to that history today.
