Today we visited ČEZ Group and learned more about how the Czech Republic approaches energy production and sustainability. One thing that stood out to me was how much balance they try to maintain between meeting energy demands and protecting the environment. They talked about plans to become coal independent by 2033, but also explained how international conflicts could delay those goals. It showed me that engineering decisions are connected to a lot more than just science and technology.

The visit also changed the way I think about sustainability. Before this, I mostly thought about it as simply reducing emissions, but now I realize how complicated it is to transition an entire country’s energy system while still making sure people have reliable and affordable power.

One environmental concern we talked about was the huge amount of energy needed for things like data centers, AI, and growing technology infrastructure. As technology keeps expanding, engineers will need to find ways to make these systems more energy efficient and develop better cooling and renewable energy solutions so the environmental impact does not keep increasing.

Another thing that made the visit memorable was how excited all the employees were to have us there. Everyone was really welcoming and eager to answer questions. They even let some of us ride in the front of one of their trucks, which was super cool and made the experience feel much more hands-on and personal.
