Mining Site (Operated by ČEZ Group)

Today we went to ČEZ, an open pit mine. We learned about the different types of energy they use and how they produce it. This gave me perspective on how difficult it can be to balance a country’s energy needs with environmental responsibilities. Coal has been historically important for the Czech Republic’s economy and energy stability. One thing that surprised me was how big the machinery looked in real life. I had never been to an open pit mine before, so it was very impressive. Knowing the environmental impacts coal mining has, ČEZ has forecasted that their coal energy will continue until 2033. Afterwards, they will continue relying on their other forms of energy. This visit also challenged my engineering assumptions because I realized energy production is not only about efficiency or output. Engineers also have to consider long-term environmental damage, land restoration, and how communities are affected by these decisions.
