Just 30 minutes outside of Porto Alegre, the capital city of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, is São Leopoldo, where we spent the first week of our study abroad trip. We stayed in accommodations directly across from the UNISINOS campus, which gave us the ability to explore the university and learn about its sustainable solutions, research projects, and industry partnerships. During one of our first tours of campus, we visited the photovoltaic plant on top of the library and learned more about the university’s focus on sustainability. We even had the chance to connect with many of the faculty and students at UNISINOS, which gave us valuable insight into engineering education and research in Brazil.
Throughout the week, we had professional visits with ittCHIP, Hemocord, Angulos Grupo, HT Micron, Higra, Certaja Energia, and CPFL Energia. Each visit exposed us to a different aspect of engineering and sustainable technology. We learned about semiconductors and chip manufacturing at HT Micron, amphibious and submersible pumps at Higra, renewable energy systems and inverters at Angulos Grupo, and power distribution systems at Certaja Energia and CPFL. As a mechanical engineering student interested in sustainable energy systems, I found the wide variety of topics incredibly informative and inspiring.

Outside of professional visits, we had many opportunities to experience the culture of Porto Alegre and surrounding areas. One of the highlights was participating in a private Capoeira dance class, which is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines dance, music, and acrobatics. This was a super engaging and fun opportunity to learn more about Brazilian culture. We visited countless traditional restaurants and tried so much delicious and unique food. The most memorable experience was when Paulo hosted a Brazilian BBQ for us. We spent hours playing games, having fun, cooking, and trying new delicious foods. I ate chicken hearts! And liked them! One of my favorite parts of Brazilian culture is the music and energy of everyday life. Throughout the trip, we encountered so much live music. I love their lively culture. I often saw people dancing on the streets and just enjoying their lives. Finally, the highlight of my time in Porto Alegre was attending the Gremio soccer game. The energy in and around the stadium was electric!
This first week in Brazil gave me a deeper appreciation for sustainable engineering and the value of experiencing a new culture firsthand!
