Foz do Iguacu was very different from Sao leopoldo because this area was more touristy. More people spoke english and the area seemed more populated. There were also more ethnic food places here and the area felt very safe and walkable. We had a long travel day but once we landed we were ready to get out there and explore.
We went to the tourism office in the city where we learned about the area and why it is so popular. Iguacu falls is the highlight of the area and when we went, it was amazing. There were so many waterfalls and a rainbow that stretched across them. It doesn’t feel real walking along that bridge staring out to one of the natural wonders of the world. It was very crowded but the water level wasn’t as high so we got a good view instead of being drenched by water from the falls.

The same day we went to the aviary and I was amazed at how many birds there were. There were macaws, owls, flamingos, and eagles. The bird that surprised me the most was the toucan. I have never seen one before and the bird looks so perfect it almost looks fake. Most of the birds came right up to us and allowed us to get close. It was definitely a cool experience. At night we went on the ferris wheel by the water and at the top we got to see Paraguay and Argentina.

My favorite site visits was to Itaipu dam because of the size and power. We took a bus tour and got to see inside the dam. I was amazed at how much power the water generates. Inside the dam I got to cross the boarder into Paraguay and see the control room. The power generated by the dam is split between Brazil and Paraguay so in the power room they need people working on both side and one manager in the middle to observe. That night we had our farewell dinner and dance show. It was cool seeing representation from all the latin countries and see the traditional outfits and dances.

Brazil was an amazing trip and I have learned so much about energy and electricity and Brazilian culture. I know some Portuguese and some of the country’s history and I am grateful for this opportunity.
