We kicked off our trip to Brazil by touring São Leopoldo, a city in Rio Grande do Sul, getting up close with the city’s views and learning about the businesses that constantly push to improve Brazil’s energy infrastructure. We explored different market areas and learned how various cultural influences shaped the city’s development. Public spaces and markets reflected influences from around the world, including Germany and Africa. Pontal Park’s marina was absolutely gorgeous, surrounded by walking paths and exercise equipment open to the public.
We also visited many companies ranging in focus from electrical distribution to renewable energy research and semiconductor production. A notable theme across all visits was how their work prioritized taking care of customers and the environment over purely chasing financial gain. During our visit to HT Micron, one moment really stuck with me. Our presenter shared that a design he developed had been taken by a much larger, internationally recognized company. Surprisingly, there was no bitterness in his reaction. He seemed energized, viewing it as proof that his work had real value and as proof that good engineering speaks for itself. His story was a reminder that great ideas can ripple outward and influence the global stage, regardless of where they originate.
